Membership in International Conventions

– None.

Filing, Protection

Applicant: any natural person or legal entity.

Applicants not living in the country: where an applicant’s ordinary residence or principal place of business is outside Zanzibar, he shall be represented by an agent who has been certified to practice in Zanzibar. 

Novelty: absolute worldwide novelty is required.

Series applications: one design application may comprise more than one design if they belong to the same class under the International Classification.

Filing requirements for an application (to be sent to resident agent):
1. Appointment of agent (simply signed);
2. 4 drawings, photographs or other graphic representations of the article embodying the industrial design (max. size: 10 x 20 cm);
3. An indication of the kind of products for which the industrial design is to be used;
4. A statement justifying the applicant’s right to the registration of the design, where the applicant is not the creator;
5. Priority document, if priority is claimed.

Electronic filing: available. 

Electronic signatures: are accepted (must be readable).

Examination: as to formalities.

Duration: five years from the filing date.

Extension: possible for two additional five-year periods.

Renewal grace period: three months with surcharge. 

Invalidation: any interested person may request the court to invalidate a registered design.
