Protection

Iran is not a member of the Berne Convention and instead relies on domestic laws. According to the 1970 Act registration is not required for owners of an original work. Copyright protection is automatic and free from the moment a work is created. To be eligible for protection, authors do not necessarily need to be Iranian, but the work must have been printed, reproduced or performed in Iran for the first time. The domestic laws do not cover/protect works from outside Iran. Registration is possible with the Ministry of Culture, but protection is not subject to such registration.

Duration: during the lifetime of the author, plus 50 years after his death; for cinematographic and photographic works the term is 30 years from publication.
