General Remarks

The Republic of Yemen is located on the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula. The country is bordered by Saudi Arabia in the north, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden in the south, Oman in the east and the Red Sea in the west. Situated in the southwest corner of the country, and being divided into two Mayoon Island, the strait of Bab-Al-Mandab controls the strategic entrance of the Red Sea. Socottra Island in the Arabian Sea is the biggest Yemeni Island and is located 510 km away from the coast and its area is 3,650 sq. km. Besides Socottra more than 186 Yemeni Islands are scattered in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, largest of which are Kamaran, Great Hunish, Little Hunish, Zakar, Al-Zobair, Al-Tair.

Protection of industrial property: the “General Department of Intellectual Property Protection” has issued three new laws related to IP protection:
– Law No. 23 of 2010 on Trademarks and Geographical Indications, issued on November 21, 2010, in force since February 23, 2011.
– Law No. 28 of 2010 on Industrial Designs, issued on December 26, 2010, in force since March 26, 2011.
– Law No. 2 of 2011 on Patents, Utility Models, Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits and Undisclosed Information, issued on January 12, 2011, in force since April 12, 2011.
