Legal Basis
There is no specific legislation although some regulations on the organization and management of country code top-level domain names do exist.
Filing
Country code top-level domain name: .hu
Sub-domains: .co.hu; .info.hu; .org.hu; .priv.hu; .sport.hu; .tm.hu (for a complete list, please consult: www.domain.hu/domain/English/szabalyzat/sld.html).
Applicant: for top-level domains: EU citizens, legal entities operating in the EU and owners of national trademarks or trademarks granted protection in Hungary; for sub-domains: any natural person or legal entity (except the .tm.hu SLD, under which only trademark holders can register domain names).
Restriction as to nationality: no, but only EU citizens or EU resident companies may apply for top-level domains, unless the applicant has a valid trademark in Hungary.
Local presence: not required, but must have a local administrative contact.
Domestic trademark right: not required for obtaining domain name registration, unless the applicant is a non-EU resident.
Domain name can be registered as a trademark: yes.
Registration, Protection
Duration: depends on appointed Registrar (usually one year).
Renewal/maintenance: depends on appointed Registrar (usually one year, renewable).
Dispute about ownership: to be brought before the Arbitration Court.
Uniform dispute resolution procedure: none, but an Alternative Dispute Resolution procedure (ADR) is available.
Authority name: Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (CHIP).
