Protection

Registration is not required for owners of an original work. Copyright protection is automatic and free from the moment a work is created. It is, however, possible to register a work with the National Library to prove evidence of its creation date.

Duration: during the lifetime of the author, plus 70 years counted from the 1st of January following the author's death. Certain works, such as audiovisual works, bear terms of 70 years counted from the 1st of January following the fixation or publication.

Registry

Authority name: there is no central entity for the registration of works. Therefore, they will have to be registered before different entities, depending on the nature of the work. Musical works will be registered at the School of Music; works of visual art at the School of Beaux-Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; and engineering and architectural works at the Federal Counsel of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy. Literary works can be registered before the National Library, which, more recently, has also been accepting the registration of all other works, not just those of a literary nature. Given that the structure provided by the National Library is usually considered to be that which is best suited to receive such registrations, it is advisable to attempt to use this system first.  Internet address: www.bn.gov.br/servicos/direitos-autorais
