General Remarks

A British colony since 1805, the Commonwealth of Dominica was granted self-government in 1967 and achieved independence in 1978. Dominica is located between the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique at 15.25N and 61.20W. The island is often referred to as “The Nature Island of the Caribbean”, as its commercial exploits are comparatively less than the neighboring islands. Its mountainous terrain, volcanic peaks and lakes and its lush and varied flora and fauna also contribute to its alias. The ethnic background is predominantly of African descent however, Dominica is also home to an indigenous population known as the Caribs. These Carib Indians are the only pre-Columbian population remaining in the eastern Caribbean.
