Membership in International Conventions

– Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), since March 2, 2012.
– The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Consular Legalization for Foreign Public Documents (Apostille), successor party since July 30, 1980.
– WTO’s TRIPS Agreement, since August 24, 2012.

Note: not a Member of the Paris Convention, but Regulations specify "Convention" countries.

Filing, Examination

Type of patents: patents granted in the United Kingdom or in Europe effective in the United Kingdom may be registered in Vanuatu, provided application is made within three years from the date of grant of the U.K. patent. 

Remark on IP implications of the U.K.'s exit from the European Union on January 31, 2020: the U.K.'s position as a contracting State of the European Patent Office (EPO) is not affected by the U.K.'s withdrawal from the EU, and European (U.K.) patents will continue to be obtainable through the EPO route.

Applicant: the owner of a U.K. patent or a European patent effective in the U.K.

Filing requirements:
1. Power of attorney;
2. Certified copy of the specification and drawings of the U.K. patent or European patent effective in the U.K.;
3. Certificate of the Comptroller-General of the United Kingdom Patent Office giving full particulars of the U.K. patent or European patent effective in the U.K.
