Although the Republic of the Maldives is a party to the TRIPS Agreement, legislation providing for the protection of trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs and patents has not yet been enacted by the Maldivian Majlis (the Parliament of the Republic of the Maldives).
It is also a contracting party to the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), since May 12, 2004.
