Austria is a democratic republic and since 1955 has been a neutral country as are Switzerland and Sweden. It is a federal republic consisting of nine federal provinces. Apart from industry and agriculture, tourism plays an essential part in its economy.
Austria is a member of the European Union. Although Austria is a small country, it plays an important role as a bridge between western and eastern Europe.
