Protection

Registration is not required for owners of an original work. Copyright protection is automatic and free from the moment a work is created. However, registration is possible and provides important benefits such as proof of ownership. The registration can be done online with IGAC. 

Duration: during the lifetime of the author, plus 70 years after his death, even if the work is published or posted posthumously.

Registry

Authority name: IGAC – Inspecção Geral das Actividades Culturais (www.igac.gov.pt). The following organizations manage joint rights: (1) Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores (Portuguese Society of Authors) which is a limited liability cooperative, established in 1925 to manage author's rights from all literary and artistic areas (music, audiovisual, dance, plastic arts, cinema, etc.). It is the sole entity of its kind in Portugal, representing more than 20,000 Portuguese authors and authors from about 200 sister societies spread throughout 90 foreign countries; (2) AUDIOGEST, a non-profit association, publicly and legally constituted and registered as an entity for the collective management of the rights of the phonographic producers with IGAC.
